“Come in!”

I pushed the door open to Marcus’ room, just in time to see him pull up his boxers. I didn’t need to close my eyes—I have seen his sexy butt a total of six times because this dude has no problem with being nude in front of other people. From previous interviews, he said he was a boxers only when sleeping kind of guy, so he was probably preparing for bed when I knocked.

“’Sup?”

I sat on his bed, smoothing the covers, and he bounced next to me, half-naked but I didn’t really mind anymore. “I’d say congrats to us, because that’s officially our first full-blown disagreement.”

Marcus actually winced. “I think you have more patience with me when our interaction was just online.”

I grinned. “I’d like to think the jetlag was the culprit.” He smiled back, and I continued. “Thanks for cooking tonight.”

He faced me, then reached for both my hands. Whenever I was around Marcus, I tend to remind myself that he’s a touchy-feely guy, like a mental connection isn’t enough. He liked holding my hand, touching my arm, and I didn’t feel bothered by that, coming from a family of huggers. “At some point, Cait, you have to realize I do these things for you because I want to. So you don’t have to thank me.”

“No, I have to thank you. You’re giving me a lot—”

“Which you deserve for putting up with everything,” he cut in. He sighed heavily. “They found you already, you know that, right?”

“Found me?”

“Fans,” he answered. “It’s a good thing your Twitter’s on private, but it doesn’t save you from all the mentions. They are calling you so many names—”

I squeezed his hands in mine. “I don’t care anymore.”

“You don’t?” The surprise in his voice was evident. I had always pressed for us to keep things private. Not a single photo of us together was posted online. The B was meant to be a code before it became the subject of a manhunt.

But I think at the end of the day, the thing I realized was this: I hated his fame, but I couldn’t have met him without it. I hated his fame, but it was a part of him, and he was my best friend, and I just had to deal with it.

I nodded. “You’re worth it, Marcus. And they can threaten me or call me names, but what really matters is this friendship…and you.”

He leaned closer, bumping foreheads with me. “No more hiding.”

“Yeah,” I breathed. “No more hiding. But still no interviews.”

Marcus chuckled in response, his green eyes glinting.

We stayed that way for a while, our breathing becoming in rhythm with each other’s. I broke it, leaned back and allowed myself to fall onto the bed. I let my feet dangle over the edge but I kicked off my sneakers. Marcus moved, placing his head on my tummy, and I smiled. I played with his hair, and I heard him sigh contentedly.

“You know what? This could probably rank high on my Happy Places list.
